Fifth Week Reflections: When Blizzards Mean Crazy Lesson Timing


Essential Question for this week:

  • What is something you learned while teaching this week?



Context: Monday - Two Hour Delay, Wednesday - No School, Thursday - Two Hour Delay

Aside from me determining that school in PA during February should just be cancelled I did get to experience some fun aspects of student teaching this week. One thing I definitely realized this week teaching is that the time in class can be tough to really lay out a solid lesson plan. Two hour delays have made me start to realize that with less time in the classroom some lessons get split into two days instead of one day. 



Two of my lessons got dragged out longer but more because with two hour delays the delayed time can drag out a lesson.  One of the benefits of allowing students more time on an activity though is the students really get to show their ability and creativity in their learning.

This week also marked the week where I got observed and I spent the week really trying to look at and come up with a plan to address the comments made. I am excited to continually work on my teaching so that I can become even better of a teacher.

The main thing I need to focus on is how to wrap up lessons for my students.  With this I need to look more in reflections and think how I can best improve my students connecting each lesson to each other.  

I hope that this week will be a great week and with actual time in the class room I'll be able to feel like I accomplished something with my students learning.  Main goal of this week is structure of my lessons and to make sure that I keep up with the structure of the lesson.

    George, wrapping up a lesson to give it closure and purpose is important, and there are a lot of great strategies and activities out there to make it happen, which I encourage you to look into. Feedback is an important part of the student teaching process (and teaching in general), and it's good that you are using it to your advantage and coming up with a plan to put it into practice. What was your favorite gem moment this week?

The End of the Summer . . . The Next Chapter  This is the final reflective blog on the reading of the book See Me After Class: Advice for Teachers by Teachers written by Roxanna Elden.  This has been a three part reflective blog on the readings of the novel over the summer. The final part of this book tackles some topics that to me stress me out.  Being observed and getting critiqued. Giving out tests and what goes wrong when giving out tests. Individualized Learning in a Room of Many Individuals (Part One) Reading Chapter 7 of our major textbook of study I can't help but find much of the lessons I am reading to be very relevant and informational for not just me but my peers when it comes to a major topic: Individualized Learning.  First let us define individualized learning: learning through the work of individuals or small groups. This concept differs from group learning because of how it applies the usage. In Group Learning I as the teacher am feeding the information. In individual learning I may give information at the end but in reality it is student driven.
