Delaware Valley University Visit for Career Development Learning
The Journey of Student Teaching: Day 36
FFA Reflections: Career Development Practice in a University not Like PSU
Essential Question for this week:
What is something you learned about CDE Practices this weekend?
CV FFA ended their National FFA week by jumpin on a bus and going all the way down to Ms Rombergers undergraduate location of Delaware Vally Universtiy. Here the Delaware Vally Collegiate FFA Alumni Chapter hosted a career development event intense practice. Here students got to work together and practice different CDE competitions such as Livestock judging, vet Sciences, floriculture, diary products evaluation, agricultural Mechanics, food Science, and horse evaluation.
The students got to interact with students from three states as they practiced and learned more about the national level competitions that are typically very similar to the state level ones. What was cool about this trip was how close the students have become to me. Instead of me just being here the students are more and more coming up to me and talking with me more. I think this is cool because it’s only been eight weeks and already they like me more and more I believe. I find it also flattering on how the students have begun asking me questions not just as a teacher but also as an Advisor. For example the students saw the tall student teacher first and approached me when it came to figuring out directions.
What I found valuable with this trip is that the kids that went on were interested in these CDE categories. They were egar to learn about these topics. Also I only expected half of the students to be engaged on a Saturday post National FFA Week but in reality all of them were engaged. One of the teacher workshops that I went too was on how we can get more kids interested in careers in agriculture which was a pretty good way to hear from teachers from three different states on the next steps for FFA and them as well.
I can see the value in taking students on trips like this for their CDEs as practice, at least once for each CDE. I can't wait to find out what the next activity is that I get to work on with the FFA chapter here is.

George, this is such a neat conference I am so glad you got to attend! It is great to hear that your students look to you as an advisor, and you are getting an authentic experience in what it is like to run an FFA chapter.
