Reflection on Interest Approach Lab: Different Lab Group, Different Challenges
Interest Approach Lab: Different Lab Group, Different Challenges
Because of my schedule this last week I had to swap Teaching Practice Labs with another member of my cohort. What this meant is I got the chance to teach a new group of students. Here are some of my lessons I learned during this time.
Interest Approaches:
Are so much fun. They help students think about something and then get interested in what to expect for the rest of class. I like to use two types of interest approaches: Unit Based, and Lesson Based.
Unit Based
An interest approach which gets students interested in the overall unit by making students see value in what they will learn.
Lesson Based
An interest approach which gets students interested in the lesson for the day.
To me these are two different ideas because they both provide a different value. A Unit Based Interest Approach gets students interested in what they will be learning for the unit, while a lesson based interest approach gets students interested in a new lesson.
This lab I go to try one of my favorite interest approaches with food science. Pricing out a meal and explaining why it is so affordable to make when things are out of season. Some things I learned is I should have printed off prices for them to see if the internet fails or tell them to look at this grocery store for the prices. I tried to go low tech but sometimes you have to go very low tech.
Again I got tossed into the ring with classroom management and though with some of it I didn't know how to handle it I think I did a better job this week handling some of the problems that were demonstrated.
These were the problems I identified in the room this week:
Ms Sass (Class Bully) - Need to think a bit more on how to handle when a student is trying to tell me "That I didn't learn what was on last friday's test". Also have to clearly identify which students I'm giving verbal warnings too as well.
Ms Gives Me a Nickname (Class Clown) - Surprisingly did really well handling this one. My strategy of "I'll deal with you later" and ignore you during the lesson actually worked.
Ms I'm too tired to learn (Sleeping in Class) - I did try to approach this as soon as I noticed in the during the bellwork and was not afraid to call her bluff when she didn't agree when I asked her if she had a long night last night. This is important to do cause you need to determine why a student is "sleeping" in you class and make a call on what you do based upon there response.

All in all I think this weeks lab went a lot better. I wished I did have half a minute more to wrap up my activity. Hopefully we really start learning about time management as a whole.
To end this blog here as some memes that I think properly describe my experience in Lab Section 2 this week:
George, I think you did a great job of dealing with the students during your lesson. I really like that you were able to relate your gems and opps with funny memes!!
