Green Blazers and Blue Cordurory #1 - Journey So Far Part 2
#1 - The Journey to Agricultural Education
Part 2
So now I'm in college, but first let me rephrase that - I'm at Penn State starting in the Fall 2013 semester. Or as real Penn State fans consider it - the Year where we asked what time it was post white out game (4 overtimes No. 18 Michigan). I met some really amazing people that helped navigate me into one of my most wildest decisions - Becoming a Dual Major.
By the end of my first year in college I loved food science but I became convinced that maybe the industry wasn't where I was meant to be. I had this feeling that I was missing something. Then I was offered to work as a summer program assistant for my local county 4-H. What did this do?
I gave me an opportunity to realize that I want to be a teacher. I've always loved working with kids when I was a 4-H Teen Leader but this experience let me work with youth ages 8 - 18. That was something totally new for me. The best part I enjoyed it!
That was when I began considering being an agriscience teacher. At Penn State, Agricultural Education is paired with Extension Education. So I began entertaining the idea of being an agriscience high school teacher as well. My father was an agriscience high school teacher and through him I saw a lot of what could be expected. But it wasn't until the next year that I started taking some actual Ag Ed courses and begin actually becoming part of the major did I realize that though my love for agricultural education started in extension and 4-H, I was meant to be in the high school classroom.
This change was lead by my involvement into Teach Ag Society and the Domestic Study Away Experience. Thanks to Teach Ag Society and the Domestic Study Away Experiences I got to learn from others with my peers on ways to be a better agriscience teacher. I would learn skills observing teachers as well as learning about the different roles agriscience teachers will face.
Now I am beginning my student teaching experience which I am super excited to begin. I will always remember my great memories and lessons I learned wearing a Green Blazer as a Super 4-Her (one of the best 4-H Camp songs), now I'm to excited to be "By the Owl" as a future FFA Advisor.
To Be Continued . . .
I think I am going to need to see a YouTube video of you singing the "Best of 4H Camp Songs"
